Cutting edge programs
Sequoia district schools continue to introduce and mature exciting career technical education (CTE) programs on the cutting edge of a 21st century global economy. Much different than vocational education programs of times-gone-by, today's CTE programs help students prepare for both college and careers through pathway programs that integrate academic knowledge with technical/occupational knowledge and skills. Students tailor their individualized course of study depending on their own personal post-secondary education plans and career interests.
Leadership priority The Sequoia district leadership and school board have identified a robust CTE initiative as a priority goal, with particular focus on designing and implementing CTE courses that provide all students employable skills and access to internships and mentoring opportunities. Ensuring all students have equal access to CTE courses and programs is also a high priority. Strengthening the commitment further, starting with the graduating class of 2013, all students will be required to complete one full year of an approved CTE course.
The Sequoia Union High School District does not discriminate in student enrollment in courses on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or disability.
Across the Sequoia district, a wide array of CTE programs are currently offered:
CARLMONT HIGH SCHOOL
MENLO-ATHERTON HIGH SCHOOL
REDWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
SEQUOIA HIGH SCHOOL
WOODSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
Expanding programs In Fall 2009, grant applications were submitted to the California Department of Education for further expansion of CTE programs at the district's four comprehensive high schools: Carlmont - Biotechnology Research & Development and Engineering Design; Menlo-Atherton - Media & Design Arts; Sequoia - Food Service & Hospitality and Performing Arts; and Woodside - Energy & Environmental Technology and Media & Design Arts. The CDE is expected to announce awarding of the grants later in 2010.
